At the 2016 HOPA Annual Meeting, we introduced the Big Idea concept to the membership. The winning proposal was:

HOPA Oncology Pharmacy Competency and Certificate Program
Proposed by: Michael Vozniak, PharmD BCOP FHOPA

In 2017, the Board appointed the Oncology Pharmacy Competency and Certificate Program Task Force to develop a comprehensive on-demand training program which would be utilized to assist in training oncology pharmacists who practice in a variety of health care settings. The Task Force has been actively working in creating an outline of the structure of the course.

This program will provide fundamental education to pharmacists who are new to oncology pharmacy and upon completion will be deemed competent to practice in oncology pharmacy. Additionally, it will help reduce variation in training that currently exists and set a professional standard for oncology training to meet minimum competency. Pharmacists who successfully complete the program will be awarded a certificate. The program will also offer continuing pharmacy education.

The task force is now looking for subject matter experts to help us develop the content for this program. The task force has developed the overall structure of this course and has broken the course down into 12 distinct areas of learning:

  1. Basic Pharmacology Oncology
  2. Validating Regimens and Cancer Treatment Orders
  3. Cost Effectiveness
  4. Calculating Appropriate Dosages
  5. Effective Patient Education
  6. Monitoring and Modifying Care Plans
  7. Designing and Implementing Supportive Care
  8. Drug Extravasations
  9. Billing and Reimbursement
  10. Medication Procurement
  11. Safe Handling Practices
  12. Investigational Drug Principles

Target Audience: The target audience for this course is intended for pharmacists practicing oncology or hospital pharmacy administration who:

  • Want to grow their skills and knowledge in oncology pharmacy
  • May or may not have completed a PGY1 or PGY2 residency
  • Are Not BCOP certified

If you have expertise or know of someone you would like to nominate in one of these areas. Please submit your information by December 31, 2018. Notification of final selection will be sent to speakers no later than January 31, 2019.
